Yango: The Mage Assassin
The Flow Update's marquee addition is Yango, a mage-assassin hybrid who brings a playstyle unlike anything currently in Honor of Kings. Classified as a mage with assassin subtags, Yango is designed for the mid lane but has the mobility and burst potential to roam effectively into the jungle and side lanes.
Yango's passive, Flow State, is the core of his kit. Every ability cast generates one Flow charge, stacking up to three. At three charges, Yango enters Flow State for five seconds, gaining 25% movement speed and converting 20% of his ability power into bonus true damage on his next two ability hits. Managing this passive (knowing when to stack charges and when to trigger Flow State) separates a good Yango from a great one.
His first ability, Ripple Strike, sends a crescent-shaped wave in a target direction. It deals moderate magic damage and marks enemies hit. If Yango hits a marked enemy with any other ability, the mark detonates for bonus damage equal to 8% of the target's max HP. The ability has a low 4-second cooldown, making it Yango's primary poke and stack-building tool.
His second ability, Tide Step, is a short-range blink that leaves behind a water clone at the cast position. After 2.5 seconds, Yango can reactivate the ability to swap positions with the clone. This gives him both an engage tool and an escape route, though timing the swap correctly under pressure requires practice.
Yango's ultimate, Torrent Convergence, channels for 0.8 seconds before releasing a vortex at a target location. The vortex pulls enemies toward its center over 1.5 seconds, dealing continuous magic damage. If Yango is in Flow State when he casts the ultimate, the vortex also silences enemies for the duration. It is a devastating team fight tool, especially when chained with ally crowd control.
Super Flow Spriteling System
The Super Flow Spriteling system is Honor of Kings' answer to companion mechanics seen in other MOBAs. Each player can equip one Spriteling before a match, and the Spriteling provides a passive bonus that persists throughout the game.
There are six Spritelings at launch:
- Blaze: Increases ability power by 3% after landing three consecutive abilities within 10 seconds.
- Gale: Grants 5% bonus movement speed when out of combat for 4 seconds. Ideal for roaming supports and junglers.
- Stone: Reduces damage taken by 4% when below 40% HP. A defensive option for tanks and fighters.
- Aqua: Restores 2% max HP over 3 seconds after scoring a kill or assist. Sustain for extended team fights.
- Spark: Increases attack speed by 5% for 3 seconds after using a basic attack on a tower. Designed for split-pushers.
- Shadow: Reduces the cooldown of your first ability by 8% after landing a killing blow on a minion wave. Strong for wave-clear mages.
Spritelings are unlocked through gameplay progression: playing matches, completing daily tasks, and participating in events. They are not purchasable with premium currency, which is a refreshing approach to what could easily have been monetized aggressively.
Ramadan Events and Themed Content
The Flow Update coincides with Ramadan, and Honor of Kings has introduced a themed event series called Lanterns of Light. The event runs for the duration of Ramadan and features daily login rewards, a community challenge, and exclusive cosmetics.
The daily login calendar includes gold, experience boosters, and a free Ramadan-themed recall animation that features floating lanterns and crescent moon motifs. The animation is permanent once claimed and available to all players who log in on at least seven days during the event period.
The community challenge, Crescent Collective, asks the global player base to collectively complete objectives: total kills, matches played, and Spritelings used. As milestones are hit, all players receive rewards including a limited Ramadan name tag, a profile border, and additional gold bonuses.
Two new skins have been released with Ramadan theming. A Ramadan skin for Diaochan features flowing robes with lantern-inspired particle effects, and a matching skin for Zhuge Liang incorporates calligraphic patterns into his ability animations. Both skins are available through direct purchase.
Balance Changes
The Flow Update includes targeted balance adjustments across several roles:
- Ying (Buff): Base magic defense increased by 15, and her ultimate's cooldown reduced by 8 seconds at max level. She has been underperforming in the support role, and these changes should help her survive team fights long enough to get value from her kit.
- Liu Bei (Buff): Passive lifesteal increased from 10% to 13%. His jungle clear speed has been suffering compared to other fighters, and the sustain boost helps his early game considerably.
- Marco Polo (Nerf): Base attack speed growth reduced, and his first ability's slow effect decreased from 30% to 22%. He has been dominating the marksman position for two consecutive patches.
- Mulan (Nerf): Heavy Sword stance damage reduced by 8% across all abilities. Mulan's burst damage in team fights was consistently too high for a hero with her level of tankiness.
- Miyamoto Musashi (Adjustment): Base HP reduced by 150, but his passive now grants 8% physical penetration (up from 5%). This shifts him toward a more glass-cannon playstyle that rewards skilled players while punishing overextension.
The Flow Update is one of the more feature-rich patches Honor of Kings has shipped. Yango looks poised to shake up the mid lane meta, the Spriteling system adds meaningful pre-game decisions, and the Ramadan events offer genuine value without requiring a credit card.
