How Evolving Universe Works

Evolving Universe is PUBG Mobile's newest game mode, introduced in the 4.3 update as part of the 8th anniversary celebration. Unlike classic battle royale, this mode divides each match into three distinct phases, each with different rules, abilities, and environmental conditions. Matches take place on a modified version of Erangel with new interactive elements placed across the map.

The core concept is straightforward: as the match progresses, the battlefield itself changes, and players gain access to abilities that alter the gunplay. Think of it as PUBG Mobile meets a hero-based mode, but with randomized ability acquisition rather than pre-selected loadouts.

Matches support 100 players in squads of four, with the same loot pool as classic Erangel. The key difference is what happens between and during zone rotations.

Phase 1: Standard Drop (Minutes 0-6)

The first phase plays identically to classic PUBG Mobile. Players drop from the plane, loot buildings, and engage in early fights. No abilities are active, and the environment is unchanged. Use this phase exactly as you would in a normal match: secure a landing spot, gear up, and position for the first zone.

The first zone circle appears at the standard time, and its behavior is unchanged. The only difference is a visual indicator on the minimap showing the locations of Anomaly Zones that will activate in Phase 2. These appear as faint purple circles on the map, giving you time to plan your rotation toward or away from them.

Strategy tip: Do not ignore these markers. If an Anomaly Zone is near your loot path, plan to contest it early in Phase 2. If multiple zones are far from your position, prioritize a vehicle so you can reach one before other squads claim the abilities.

Phase 2: Evolution (Minutes 6-15)

Phase 2 begins when the first zone closes. Anomaly Zones activate simultaneously across the map, typically five or six per match, distributed to cover different areas of the playable circle.

Entering an Anomaly Zone triggers a brief channeling animation (2 seconds, during which you can be interrupted by damage). Successfully channeling grants one of three randomized abilities:

  • Surge Dash: A short-range dash (approximately 10 meters) on a 15-second cooldown. Excellent for repositioning during fights, crossing open ground, or pushing enemies behind cover. The dash does not make you invincible, but your character model moves fast enough that tracking you is difficult.
  • Energy Shield: Deploys a circular energy barrier in front of you that blocks 300 damage before breaking. It lasts 8 seconds or until destroyed, with a 25-second cooldown. The shield is transparent with a visible shimmer, so enemies can still see you through it, but they cannot shoot through it from the front.
  • Speed Surge: Grants 40% increased movement speed for 6 seconds on a 20-second cooldown. Unlike Surge Dash, this is sustained speed rather than a burst, making it better for rotations and repositioning rather than combat mobility.

Each player can hold only one ability at a time. If you want a different one, you must find another Anomaly Zone and channel it, which replaces your current ability. Anomaly Zones deactivate after being used twice, so contested zones get depleted quickly.

Strategy tip: Surge Dash is the strongest overall ability for gunfight scenarios. If you get Energy Shield or Speed Surge, they are still useful, but consider swapping if an unclaimed zone is accessible. Teams where all four members have Surge Dash have a significant advantage in close-quarters engagements.

Phase 3: Convergence (Minutes 15 to End)

Phase 3 activates when the zone shrinks to approximately the fourth circle. The environment changes dramatically: the sky shifts to a dark purple, ambient energy crackles across the landscape, and two new hazards appear.

Gravity Anomalies are visible as swirling distortions on the ground. Walking through one launches you upward about 15 meters. You can use this for repositioning or to gain a vantage point, but you are highly vulnerable in the air. Gravity anomalies are static and visible on the minimap.

Energy Storms are roaming damage zones that move slowly across the final circles. They deal 10 damage per second and obscure vision inside them, similar to a red zone but smaller and mobile. You can hear them approaching: a distinct crackling sound that intensifies as the storm gets closer.

In Phase 3, abilities gain an enhanced effect:

  • Surge Dash: Cooldown reduced to 10 seconds, and the dash leaves behind a brief smoke trail that provides partial visual cover.
  • Energy Shield: Now blocks 450 damage and reflects 15% of absorbed damage back toward the shooter.
  • Speed Surge: Duration increased to 8 seconds and now also grants 15% damage reduction while active.

Strategy tip: Phase 3 is where Energy Shield becomes arguably the best ability. In tight final circles where cover is limited, a 450-HP barrier with damage reflection can win you the chicken dinner. If you have the opportunity to swap to Energy Shield before Phase 3, consider it.

Reward Tiers

Evolving Universe has its own reward track separate from the Royale Pass. Rewards are based on cumulative performance across matches, tracked by Evolution Points (EP). You earn EP based on:

  • Kills: 10 EP per elimination
  • Ability usage: 5 EP per ability activation in combat
  • Placement: Top 10 finish = 30 EP, Top 5 = 50 EP, Winner = 100 EP
  • Phase 3 survival: 20 bonus EP for reaching Phase 3

Reward milestones include a themed weapon skin at 200 EP, a unique parachute trail at 500 EP, a character outfit at 1000 EP, and a mythic-tier emote at 2000 EP. The rewards are time-limited to the current season.

Classic Mode vs Evolving Universe: Key Differences

  • Match duration: Evolving Universe matches run approximately 25 minutes on average, compared to 30+ for classic Erangel, due to the environmental hazards pushing action in Phase 3.
  • Final circle gameplay: Classic mode rewards positioning and patience. Evolving Universe rewards adaptability due to energy storms and gravity anomalies that force movement.
  • Skill ceiling: Ability management adds a layer of decision-making that classic mode does not have. Knowing when to use your ability versus saving it for a critical moment is a genuinely new skill to develop.
  • Loot: Identical to classic Erangel. No special loot spawns outside of the Anomaly Zone abilities.
  • Ranking: Evolving Universe currently has its own ranked ladder separate from classic mode, so you can grind it without affecting your classic rank.

Evolving Universe is the most ambitious mode PUBG Mobile has introduced in some time. It manages to change the formula enough to feel fresh without abandoning the core gunplay that makes the game popular. Whether you are a returning player or a veteran, it is worth investing a few matches to learn the ability system and Phase 3 mechanics.
