Your Path to That First Chicken Dinner

PUBG Mobile remains one of the most popular battle royale experiences on mobile, known for its realistic gunplay, tactical depth, and the incomparable rush of seeing "Winner Winner Chicken Dinner" flash across your screen. If you're just starting out, these ten tips will give you a concrete advantage over other beginners and set you on the path to consistent top-ten finishes and beyond.

1. Choose Your Drop Location Wisely

Your landing spot determines your first five minutes and often your entire match. As a beginner, avoid high-traffic areas like Pochinki, School, Military Base, and Georgopol. Instead, aim for medium-loot locations that are slightly off the plane's flight path.

Good beginner-friendly locations on Erangel include Gatka, Zharki, Lipovka, and the scattered houses between major towns. These spots have enough loot to get fully equipped while seeing far fewer enemies in the early game. As your gunfight skills improve, you can start dropping hotter.

2. Master the Looting Phase

Efficient looting means spending less time staring at the ground and more time playing the game. Prioritise in this order:

  • Primary weapon: An assault rifle (M416, AKM, SCAR-L, Beryl M762) or SMG. Grab the first gun you see.
  • Armour: Level 2 vest and helmet minimum. Level 3 is ideal but rarer.
  • Healing: First aid kits, bandages, energy drinks, and painkillers. You need all types.
  • Attachments: Grips, compensators, and scopes make your weapons dramatically more effective.
  • Throwables: Carry at least two frag grenades and a smoke grenade at all times.

Your ideal loadout is two primary weapons covering different ranges: one assault rifle or SMG for close-to-mid range and one DMR or sniper for long range. If you find a Kar98k or Mini14 alongside your AR, you're in excellent shape.

3. Understand Circle Rotation

The blue zone (the shrinking safe area) is what drives the game forward. Poor circle management kills more beginners than enemy players do. Follow these rules:

  • Move early: Don't wait until the circle is closing on you. Start rotating toward the safe zone when the next circle appears on the map.
  • Hug the edge: Moving along the edge of the safe zone means enemies can only approach from one direction. Running through the centre of the circle exposes you to fire from all sides.
  • Use vehicles for long rotations: If the circle is far away, find a vehicle. Running across open ground for two minutes is dangerous.
  • Position near cover: When you stop moving, always be near a tree, rock, building, or terrain fold. Never stand in an open field.

4. Learn to Peek Effectively

Peeking is the art of exposing as little of your body as possible while still being able to shoot. PUBG Mobile has a lean function (peek left and right) that you should enable and practice:

  • Use the lean buttons to peek around corners, trees, and walls
  • Third-person perspective lets you see around corners without exposing yourself; use this for gathering information before peeking to shoot
  • Quick-peek: lean out, fire a burst, lean back in. Don't hold a peek for longer than necessary
  • When behind cover, alternate which side you peek from to keep enemies guessing

Enable the lean buttons in your settings and place them where you can reach them comfortably during combat. Many players position them near the aim and fire buttons.

5. Use Vehicles Strategically

Vehicles are powerful tools but come with trade-offs:

  • Speed for rotation: Vehicles get you into the safe zone fast. This is their primary value.
  • Noise is the cost: Vehicles are loud and attract attention from every player in the area. Don't drive aimlessly; drive with purpose and park when you've reached your destination.
  • Cover in a pinch: A parked vehicle can serve as improvised cover in open areas. Crouch behind it during firefights if nothing else is available.
  • Don't drive in the final circles: The noise gives away your position and the small zone means everyone will converge on you. Ditch the vehicle once the safe zone shrinks below a few hundred metres.

6. Master Your Sensitivity Settings

Sensitivity settings directly impact your aim, and the defaults aren't optimised for most players. Adjust these gradually:

  • Camera sensitivity: Controls how fast you look around. Medium-low values give you smoother tracking.
  • ADS (Aim Down Sights) sensitivity: Should be lower than your camera sensitivity for precise aiming. Adjust each scope level individually: red dot and holographic should be a bit higher, 4x and 6x should be lower.
  • Gyroscope sensitivity: If you use gyroscope (recommended for fine-tuning aim), set it to low-medium. High gyroscope sensitivity causes overcorrection.

Make small adjustments over time. Changing sensitivity drastically will reset your muscle memory and make you worse before you get better. Test changes in the training ground before taking them into matches.

7. Use Sound to Your Advantage

PUBG Mobile's audio design is rich with information. Play with headphones and pay attention to:

  • Footsteps: You can hear enemies approaching, determine their direction, and estimate their distance. Footstep sounds change based on surface type (grass, concrete, wood).
  • Gunshots: Distant gunshots reveal where fights are happening. You can third-party (attack players who are already fighting) or avoid the area entirely.
  • Vehicle engines: Audio tells you the direction and approximate distance of vehicles. Use this to avoid or intercept.
  • Door sounds: Opening and closing doors makes noise. If you hear a door open nearby, someone is there.

Your own noise matters too. Crouch-walking is quieter than running. Don't sprint through buildings when you know enemies are nearby.

8. Communication Wins Squad Games

If you're playing squads or duos, clear communication is a massive advantage:

  • Call out directions: Use compass bearings ("enemy at 270" or "northwest") rather than vague directions like "over there"
  • Share information: "I hear footsteps in the building south of me" or "Vehicle approaching from the bridge"
  • Coordinate pushes: Don't trickle in one by one. Push together, from different angles if possible
  • Mark the map: Use map markers to indicate enemy positions, loot, and planned rotations

If you're playing with randoms and don't have voice chat, use the quick message system and map markers. Even basic communication is better than none.

9. Play the Final Circles Patiently

The last few circles are where matches are won or lost. Patience and positioning trump aggressive play here:

  • Find hard cover: A rock, a wall, a terrain ridge. Something solid between you and the majority of remaining players.
  • Go prone in grass: In the final circles, going prone in tall grass makes you nearly invisible. Don't do this in open dirt or short grass where you'll stand out.
  • Use smokes: Smoke grenades break line of sight and let you reposition safely. This is why you carry them all game.
  • Let others fight: In the top ten, every fight you take risks your position and health. If two other players are shooting at each other, let them. Engage the survivor when they're weak.
  • Watch for the final circle shift: The very last circles are small and force everyone together. Pre-position where the circle will close rather than reacting after it moves.

10. Review and Improve

The difference between a beginner and a consistent winner is the willingness to learn from mistakes:

  • After every death, ask why: Was it bad positioning? Poor aim? Bad circle rotation? Getting caught looting? Identifying the mistake is the first step to fixing it.
  • Use the training ground: Spend ten minutes warming up your aim before your first match of the day. Practice spray control with your favourite assault rifle at different distances.
  • Watch your replays: PUBG Mobile allows you to spectate and review matches. Watch how the player who killed you was positioned and what they did differently.
  • Set small goals: Instead of "I need to win," aim for "I'll survive to the top 20" or "I'll get at least three kills." Small, achievable goals build skill incrementally.

Every Chicken Dinner starts with solid fundamentals. Nail the basics of dropping, looting, rotating, and positioning, and the wins will come as your game sense develops naturally.
