Bermuda Gets a Facelift
Free Fire's OB48 update brings significant changes to Bermuda, the game's original and most iconic map. The developers have reworked three key areas to improve pacing and reduce the number of early-game eliminations caused by poor loot distribution.
Clock Tower has been expanded with two additional buildings flanking the main tower. These buildings contain mid-tier loot spawns, spreading the landing spots across a wider area. Previously, Clock Tower fights were decided by whoever grabbed the one good weapon on the ground floor. Now there is enough loot to sustain three or four players landing in the area, leading to more interesting early gunfights.
Pochinok receives a layout overhaul. The open fields between buildings have been replaced with shipping containers and low walls, providing cover for rotations within the compound. This is a direct response to the long-standing complaint that crossing Pochinok in the mid-game was a death sentence against snipers.
Bimasakti Strip now has an underground section accessible through two stairwell entrances. The underground area contains three loot crates with guaranteed rare weapon spawns and a respawn token. It is a high-risk landing spot since the two exits are easy to camp, but the guaranteed loot quality makes it tempting.
Weapon Balancing: Winners and Losers
OB48 reshuffles the weapon meta with meaningful changes to several staple guns:
Buffed Weapons
- FAMAS: Damage per round increased from 44 to 47, and the burst fire recoil pattern has been tightened. The FAMAS was largely ignored in favor of the M4A1 and AK, but this damage boost brings it back as a legitimate mid-range option. The three-round burst can now down a level 2 vest target in two bursts to the chest.
- MP40: Magazine size increased from 20 to 24 rounds (base, before attachments). The MP40's rate of fire was always its strength, but running dry after two seconds limited its viability. Four extra rounds provide enough margin to finish a fight without reloading.
- Kar98k: Aim down sight speed improved by 12%. This sniper has been outclassed by the AWM and M82B for several patches. The faster ADS makes it more viable for aggressive sniping and quick-scope plays.
Nerfed Weapons
- M4A1: Base damage reduced from 53 to 51, and long-range damage falloff starts 5 meters earlier. It remains a strong all-rounder, but it no longer outperforms dedicated long-range weapons at distance.
- MAC10: Rate of fire reduced by 8%. The MAC10 has been the undisputed close-range king for three patches, deleting players before they could react. This nerf brings its time-to-kill more in line with other SMGs.
- M82B: Penetration damage through gloo walls reduced from 85% to 65%. The M82B's ability to ignore cover was warping the meta, making gloo walls nearly useless in the late game.
Character Ability Adjustments
Several character abilities have been retuned in OB48:
- Chrono (Nerf): Time Turner shield duration reduced from 5 seconds to 3.5 seconds, and the cooldown increased by 10 seconds. Chrono has been the most-picked character in ranked for over a year, and this is the most aggressive nerf he has received. The shield is still useful, but it is no longer a get-out-of-jail-free card.
- Alok (Adjustment): Drop the Beat healing per second increased from 5 to 6 HP/s, but the movement speed bonus reduced from 15% to 10%. This shifts Alok from a mobility tool to more of a sustain support pick.
- Homer (Buff): Drone deployment range increased by 20%, and the drone now reveals enemy positions for 5 seconds instead of 3. Homer was underused despite having a unique scouting kit. This should make him a viable pick in squad modes.
- Sonia (Buff): Nano Damage ability now reduces enemy armor effectiveness by 15% for 4 seconds (up from 10% for 3 seconds). A meaningful upgrade that makes her valuable in late-game engagements against heavily armored opponents.
Clash Squad Changes
Clash Squad, Free Fire's round-based competitive mode, receives several updates in OB48:
The economy system has been reworked. Starting gold increased from 1500 to 1800 in the first round, and the kill bonus has been reduced from 500 to 400. The goal is to reduce the snowball effect where one team wins the first round and then dominates through superior economy for the rest of the match. With more starting gold, losing teams can afford decent weapons in round two instead of being stuck with pistols.
A new weapon request system allows teammates to drop purchased weapons for allies, similar to the buy system in tactical shooters. This adds a layer of team strategy to the buying phase, where one player can sacrifice their loadout to give a better-performing teammate their preferred weapon.
The overtime mechanic has also been updated. If the match reaches 4-4 in rounds, the final round now starts with all players at full equipment (level 3 vest, helmet, and 3000 gold) instead of standard starting gold. This ensures the deciding round is a pure skill test rather than being influenced by accumulated economy.
Additional New Features
- Tactical Marking 2.0: The ping system now supports enemy count callouts. Players can mark a location and specify how many enemies they spotted (1-4), displayed as a numbered icon on teammates' screens.
- Replay System: A new post-match replay viewer allows players to rewatch their full match from any angle. Replays are stored locally and can be saved for up to seven days.
- Custom HUD Presets: Players can now save and switch between three HUD layouts, making it easier to swap between device setups or playstyles.
OB48 is a well-targeted update that addresses the most pressing balance issues while adding quality features that improve the day-to-day experience. The Bermuda changes alone should make the most-played map feel fresh again.
