Understanding the Ranked Landscape

Climbing ranked in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is about more than mechanical skill. Season 40 continues the five-on-five MOBA format where macro play, draft strategy, and consistency determine who reaches Mythic and beyond. Whether you are stuck in Epic or pushing for Mythical Glory, the principles in this guide apply across every rank tier.

The ranked system progresses from Warrior through Elite, Master, Grandmaster, Epic, Legend, Mythic, and finally Mythical Glory. Each tier below Mythic uses a star-based system where wins grant stars and losses remove them. Mythic and above use a points system where your ranking is determined by accumulated Mythic Points.

Hero Pool Recommendations by Rank

Warrior to Grandmaster: Carry-Oriented Heroes

At lower ranks, individual skill can single-handedly win games. Focus on heroes who can snowball and carry fights without relying on team coordination:

  • Marksman: Lesley, Miya: Simple mechanics, devastating late-game damage
  • Fighter: Zilong, Alucard: Strong split-pushing and 1v1 dueling
  • Assassin: Saber, Karina: Straightforward burst combos that punish out-of-position players

At this level, mastering one or two heroes deeply is more effective than having a wide hero pool. Pick someone you enjoy and learn their limits.

Epic to Legend: Versatility Required

Epic is where the draft system introduces bans, and players start to understand team composition basics. You need at least three to four heroes you can play competently:

  • Gold Lane: Claude, Brody: Strong laners who transition into team fight threats
  • Jungler: Ling, Fanny, Hayabusa: High-impact junglers who can invade and rotate
  • Mid Lane: Valentina, Yve: Mages who provide zone control and burst
  • Roamer: Chou, Atlas, Khufra: Initiators who set up kills for the team
  • EXP Lane: Esmeralda, Yu Zhong: Sustain fighters who win lane and join team fights

Legend to Mythic: Meta Awareness

At Legend and above, you need to understand the current meta and adapt your picks accordingly. Ban phase knowledge becomes critical:

  • Always have a backup hero for each role in case your main is banned
  • Learn two roles well so you can fill during the draft
  • Counterpicking matters: if the enemy locks in a melee-heavy composition, ranged poke heroes gain value

Draft Strategy

First Pick vs. Last Pick

If your team has first pick, secure the most contested meta hero before the enemy can. If you are picking last, you have the advantage of counterpicking the enemy composition. Both positions have value, so do not panic if you are last pick.

Composition Fundamentals

A balanced team composition in Season 40 typically looks like:

  • One primary damage dealer (Marksman or burst Mage)
  • One jungler with assassination or diving capability
  • One tanky roamer/support with crowd control
  • One EXP lane fighter who can absorb damage
  • One flex pick (second mage, additional fighter, or utility hero)

Avoid drafting full-damage compositions with no frontline. Even if every player wins their lane, the team will collapse in five-on-five fights without a tank or fighter to absorb abilities.

Macro Play: Rotations and Objectives

Early Game (Minutes 1-5)

  • Clear your first minion wave, then rotate to secure the first Lithowanderer spawn for gold advantage.
  • The jungler should aim to hit level 4 as quickly as possible and immediately look for a gank on the most vulnerable lane.
  • Do not overstay in a lane trying to get kills. One minion wave is worth roughly the same gold as a kill, and farm is more reliable than fighting.

Mid Game (Minutes 5-12)

  • Group for the first Turtle. Turtle buff provides team-wide gold, and securing it accelerates your power spike.
  • After Turtle, push the lane closest to where the fight happened. Converting kills into tower damage is how you translate fights into objective leads.
  • Roamers should be the most active player on the map, moving between lanes to set up vision and initiate ganks.

Late Game (Minutes 12+)

  • Lord becomes the primary objective. A successful Lord take often leads to a game-ending push.
  • Avoid fighting without vision. Getting ambushed at Lord is the most common way to throw a winning game.
  • Stick with your team. Solo split-pushing is risky in late game unless you have a hero specifically built for it (like Sun or Masha).

Common Mistakes That Cost Rank

Chasing Kills Instead of Objectives

The single biggest mistake at every rank. After winning a team fight, push a tower instead of chasing the surviving enemies across the map. Towers are permanent advantages; kills are temporary.

Not Watching the Map

The minimap tells you everything. If three enemy icons disappear, they are probably rotating to gank someone. Ping missing enemies and play cautiously until they reappear. This habit alone will prevent deaths from avoidable ganks.

Tilting and Toxic Behaviour

Flaming teammates after a mistake makes them play worse, not better. Mobile Legends is a team game, and a tilted team is a losing team. Mute players who are being negative, focus on your own play, and communicate through pings rather than chat.

Playing While Fatigued

If you lose two ranked games in a row, stop playing ranked. Losing streaks compound because your mental state deteriorates, leading to worse decision-making. Take a break, play a casual match, or come back tomorrow.

Duo Queue: The Fastest Way to Climb

Solo queue is viable but inherently inconsistent because you rely on four random teammates. Duo queueing with a trusted partner lets you control two positions in the draft and coordinate plays that are impossible with strangers.

Best Duo Role Combinations

  • Jungler + Roamer: You control the map together. The roamer provides vision and crowd control while the jungler secures kills and objectives. This is the most impactful duo combination.
  • Gold Lane + Roamer: A strong Marksman with a dedicated support roamer can dominate the gold lane and transition that lead into team fights.
  • Mid Lane + Jungler: Coordinated mid-jungle invades can snowball the early game by denying the enemy jungler their farm.

Mindset for Climbing

Ranked climbing is a marathon, not a sprint. You will have losing streaks even when playing well, because some games are genuinely unwinnable due to AFK teammates or mismatched compositions. The goal is not to win every game. It is to hold a win rate above 55%, which produces steady climbing over time.

Focus on improving one aspect of your gameplay each week: map awareness one week, last-hitting the next, team fight positioning the week after. Small, consistent improvements compound into significant rank gains over a season.
